Individual Dressage — Ashley Holzer of Toronto placed 19th with a score of 67.042 to qualify for the next round. Jacquie Brooks, Mt. Albert, Ont.,
(63.750) and Leslie Reid, Langley, B.C., (59.750) did not advance, placing 29th and 44th, respectively.
Team Dressage — Canada (Leslie Reid, Langley, B.C., Jacquie Brooks, Mt. Albert, Ont., and Ashley Holzer, Toronto) placed ninth in the final with a combined score of 63.514.
FENCING
Women's Team Sabre — Canada (Julie Cloutier, Repentigny, Que., Sandra SASSINE, Montreal, and Olga Ovtchinnikova, Toronto), beat South Africa 45-16 to claim seventh place after losing 45-22 to France in the quarter-finals and 45-44 to Poland in the 5-8 qualifications.
GYMNASTICS
Men's Individual All-Round — Adam Wong of Calgary finished 15th in the final rankings with a score of 89.800. Nathan Gafuik, also from Calgary, finished 17th (89.625).
JUDO
Men's under 100 kilograms — Keith Morgan of Calgary lost to Daniel Brata, Romania, by Ippon, Ouchi-gari, in the round of 16 after defeating Teofilo Diek, Dominican Republic, by Ippon, Sasae-tsurikomi-ashi.
Women's under 78kg — Marylise Levesque, St-Pacome, Que., lost in the quarter-finals to Yang Xiuli of China by Ippon, Ippon-seoi-nage, after defeating Stephanie Grant, Australia, by Ippon, Osoto-gari.
SWIMMING
Men's 200 Breaststroke — Mike Andrew Brown of Perth, Ont., finished fourth in the finals with a time of two minutes 9.03 seconds, missing a medal by 0.09 seconds.
Men's 200 Backstroke — Tobias Oriwol, Montreal, finished seventh in his semifinal heat with a time of 1:59.50, failing to qualify for the finals. Keith Beavers of Orangeville, Ont., also finished seventh in his heat and failed to qualify (1:58.50).
Men's 200 Individual Medley — Keith Beavers, Orangeville, Ont., finished fifth in his semifinal heat with a time of 1:59.43, qualifying for the finals.
Men's 50 Freestyle — Richard Hortness, Medicine Hat, Alta., placed 27th with a time of 22.42 seconds, 0.25 seconds behind the final qualifying time.
Men's 100 Butterfly — Joe Bartoch of London, Ont., placed 34th in qualifying with a time of 52.90 seconds and will not advance to the next round. Adam Sioui, Trenton, Ont., also failed to advance, finishing 39th (53.38).
Women's 100 Freestyle — Erica Morningstar, Calgary, finished seventh in her semifinal heat with a time of 55.36 seconds, not enough to qualify for the final.
Women's 200 Breaststroke — Annamay Pierse of Edmonton placed third in her semifinal heat and qualified for the finals with a time of 2:23.94.
Women's 800 Freestyle — Tanya Hunks of Brantford, Ont., finished 23rd in qualifying with a time of eight minutes 38.05 seconds, failing to qualify for the next round.
Women's 200 Backstroke — Lindsay Seemann, Newmarket, Ont., did not advance past qualifying after placing 30th with a time of two minutes 15.07 seconds. Julia Wilkinson of Stratford, Ont., did not race to conserve her energy for another event.
