Author Tom Bower: "During [David] Radler’s seven days of testimony, I sat with him early most mornings by our hotel’s swimming pool. Munching an apple, he was stoic about his fate but noticeably furious about the behaviour of his ex-partner and – especially – of Barbara Amiel.
"Radler blamed Amiel for Black’s obsession to feed her extravagance. Insane greed, Radler believed, had destroyed all their lives. Black, he knew, resented that judgment."
• Citizenship and Immigration Canada spokesperson Karen Shadd-Evelyn: "in general, a person convicted of a serious crime is inadmissible to Canada." AP: "That means 'in essence' that a convicted felon cannot even visit for a day."
• Lord Black: "This war has gone on for nearly four years and the original allegations have been worn down to a fraction of where they started," he said. "The prosecutors lost most of their case. We move on to the Court of Appeals and expect to dispose of what is left of these false charges."
• Columbia University professor John Coffee: "[Black] defence council can say that they won acquittals on nine of 13 charges but frankly that's a very pyrrhic victory. This is a little like having 13 bullets shot at you, and if you dodge nine of them but four hit you between the eyes you can't call that a victory."
• Chicago Sun-Times editorial: "Our former boss was convicted Friday in a mixed verdict, but there's nothing mixed about our reaction. Everyone who worked under the trying regime of Conrad Black is breathing a great sigh of relief that a federal jury on Friday convicted him of four of the 13 counts against him -- more than enough to put him behind bars and a giant step toward guaranteeing that he cannot regain control of his media empire."
