Liberal MP Telegdi defends use of term 'Nigger"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 13, 2006

OTTAWA — Andrew Telegdi, Liberal Member of Parliament and Liberal candidate for the riding of Kitchener-Waterloo, defended his use of the term 'nigger" at an all-candidates meeting held on Wednesday.

The Facts:

· As President of the Federation of Students at the University of Waterloo, Mr. Telegdi said students did not vote in a municipal election because, 'they want to be niggers" (The Chevron, December 6, 1974).

· When asked about the incident at an all-candidates' meeting two days ago, Mr. Telegdi defended the comments and refused to apologize (The Record, January 12, 2006).

· Mr. Telegdi served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister from January 30th, 2004 to July 19th, 2004. Mr. Martin offered to reappoint Telegdi as a Parliamentary Secretary (The Record, July 23, 2004).

Mr. Telegdi continues to be the Liberal candidate in Kitchener-Waterloo with the full blessing and support of Paul Martin and the Liberal Party of Canada.
