A man jumped into the icy waters of the Niagara River and was swept over the Niagara's Horsehoe Falls. Incredibly, the 30-year old man survived even as the force of the fall ripped the clothes from his body. Emergency crews fished him out of the swirling, frothy waters below. Footage showed the man resisting rescue efforts. Sadly, it was later reported that the man had been suicidal. He was taken to hospital and treated. His condition was upgraded Friday from critical to fair.
2. Quebec reality show seeks province's best stripper (The Canadian Press) 14,598 views
In lighter news, a Quebec entrepreneur is launching a new reality television series in Quebec called Pole Position. The show plans to crown the province's top stripper. The show's producers hope to expand the franchise across the country. The four-episode show will air on pay-per-view in Quebec. The show's producer also expressed the hope that the series would highlight the discipline and talent required to pole dance. Seriously.
3. Martha Stewart's dog killed in explosion (The Associated Press) 11,675 views
The talk show host's Chow puppy was one of 17 dogs killed in an accidental propane explosion at an eastern Pennsylvania kennel. The kennel was getting a propane delivery when the mishap occurred and a tank ignited, setting the pens on fire. The kennel specialized in breeding show dogs. Ms. Stewart issued a statement saying that she was deeply saddened by the tragedy.
4. How will this bear market end? (The Globe and Mail) 10,275 views
The Globe and Mail's investment expert Rob Carrick spoke to Eric Kirzner of the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Business in the latest episode of Let's Talk Investing last week. When will this bear market end? Mr. Kirzner said that a sign the end would be in sight would be when the frequency of bad news began to ebb. The week ended on hopeful results as the markets rallied for three successive days. Mr. Kirzner added that there is no real answer as to when things will improve.
5. Suicide bomber kills 14 in Sri Lanka (The Associated Press) 7,542 views
This footage shows in dramatic fashion the very moment a suicide bomber's explosives detonated among a crowd of Muslims marching during a ceremony in Sri Lanka. The images are haunting and the violence jarring. Viewer discretion is advised.
6. Anderson walks Paris runway (The Associated Press) 7,019 views
Canada's most infamous pin-up, Pamela Anderson, added glamour model to her CV when she walked the Paris runway last week for designer Vivienne Westwood. According to Vogue UK, Ms. Westwood asked the former Baywatch star to appear in her Spring 2009 ready-to-wear show after she saw her in a skin-tight gold frock at a runway show in 2008. All didn't go according to plan during the show however when an alleged wardrobe malfunction shocked onlookers. There is no evidence of the malfunction in the clip provided by the Associated Press.
7. Dancing with the Stars preview (The Associated Press) 5,703 views
A new season of reality television's favourite guilty pleasure is upon us. The roster of stars includes Go-Go's singer Belinda Carlisle, actor David Alan Grier, Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson, rapper Lil' Kim, rodeo champ Ty Murray, actress Denise Richards, former NFL legend Lawrence Taylor and Apple Computer co-founder Steve Wozniak to name a few. It appeared after the first week that Mr. Wozniak's chances of making it deep into the competition were as slim as the companies' newest MacBook. Interestingly, geeks the world over have made it their goal to save Mr. Wozniak from his eventual fate by rallying online support in the form of call-in votes. Votes from the public account for half of a dancer's standing in the competition. Not sure if Apple has sold enough iPhones to save the rhythmically-challenged Mr. Wozniak.
8. That's one spicy pepper (The Associated Press) 5,466 views
Shoppers at a New York market were surprised when they discovered that green peppers they had purchased were stuffed with baggies of cocaine. Authorities were investigating how the peppers came to contain the controlled substance, and were looking into the supplier. Police conceeded that this method for smuggling drugs was a new one on them.
9. Facebook, Twitter face off (The Associated Press) 5,080 views
Social networking giant Facebook unveiled changes to its homepage this week in an attempt to stave off competition from upstart micro-blogging site Twitter. Facebook increased the frequency of its status updates in a move many said was an attempt to keep users from gravitating towards Twitter, which allows instant updates from its members as well as the ability to link to blogs and share pictures.
10. Outtakes with Ricky Gervais and Elmo (The Associated Press) 4,663 views
Comedian Ricky Gervais was filming a promotional spot for an upcoming Sesame Street 40th Anniversary special, when things went off the rails and the interview broke down amid The Office and Extras creator's non-stop jokes. However, Mr. Gervais was caught off guard many times as Elmo showed his comedic chops and held his own. The clip is made up of outtakes that won't make the November special which is a good thing, since one of the highlights of the clip was when Mr. Gervais tells Elmo, "There are three no-go areas. 'Drugs, child abuse and the Holocaust.' "
