Alex Colville, perhaps the most famous Canadian artist of the past 60 years, will get the retrospective treatment next summer at the Art Gallery of Ontario. The Toronto gallery announced Wednesday morning it will present close to 100 works, including paintings and serigraphs, by the artist who died in July this year at 92. Precise dates for the show weren't provided but it's expected the show will start some time in August, 2014, and end January, 2015.

There are no plans to tour the exhibition after its Toronto bow. AGO curator of Canadian art Andrew Hunter is assembling works from museums and private collections here and abroad. Among the well-known works secured are Horse and Train (1953), Target Pistol and Man (1980) and To Prince Edward Island (1965). The gallery, which last held a Colville retrospective in 1983, also intends to highlight his impact on other artists' work, including those of musicians, filmmakers and writers.
