Janet Carding is leaving as CEO and director of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, it was announced by the ROM Wednesday morning.

Carding, 49, was named to the position in spring 2010 and began work there in September of that year. She'll stay on at the ROM until March 31 next year, then return to Australia where she was assistant director of the Australian Museum in Sydney before her arrival in Canada.

No announcement was made of what her next duties may be. Carding most recently oversaw the 100th anniversary celebrations for the opening of the ROM, the largest museum in Canada to explore both the natural world and human culture.

Born and educated in England, Carding spent most of a quarter-century career working in science museums in London before moving to Australia. She is the first female CEO/director of the ROM.
