Nominations for the 2013 Drama Desk Awards were announced Monday – and the Canadian contingent that helped bring a circus-themed revival of Pippin to Broadway were roundly recognized for their work.
Circus creator Gypsy Snider, co-founder of Montreal’s Les 7 doigts de la main, shared a nomination for best choreography with Chet Walker, while frequent Cirque du Soleil collaborator Dominique Lemieux was nominated for her costume designs.
Former SCTV star Andrea Martin, meanwhile, was nominated for her show-stopping acrobatic performance as swingin’ grandmother, Berthe, in the Stephen Schwartz musical; she previously won the award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical in 1993 for her work on My Favourite Year, and has been nominated several times since.
In total, director Diane Paulus’s big-top revival of Pippin received six nominations.
Les 7 doigts de la main aren’t the only Canadian circus company up for awards at this year at the Drama Desks. Cirque du Soleil’s touring show Totem – directed by Robert Lepage – is nominated in the category of Unique Theatrical Experience.
However, most-nominated for this year’s Drama Desk Awards – chosen by a panel of New York theatre writers and critics who consider fare both on Broadway and off-Broadway – are two musicals that have already closed. Hands on a Hardbody, a Broadway commercial flop based on a documentary of the same name, earned nine nods – including one for Toronto-raised choreographer Sergio Trujillo. So did Giant, a musical based on the 1952 Edna Furber novel of the same name that premiered off-Broadway at the Public Theater.
The Drama Desk nominations come out a day before those for the Tony Awards, which honour only shows that play on Broadway. For a full list of nominees, click here . Winners are announced May 19.
