Finally! A controversy at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.

Alex Billington, a movie blogger who was attending a midnight industry screening of a horror film, complained to TIFF officials about a man in front of him who was on his smartphone constantly as the movie screened. It is apparently TIFF policy that cellphones not be used during a film, but enforcement is generally more lax during what are called press and industry screenings.

After arguing for a while and leaving the theatre, he apparently became so upset that he called 911. He has since apologized for the gaffe, but he raised a serious issue about the use of smartphones and celllphones during movie screenings, be it in press and industry screenings or public ones. Here is a brief history of the episode.
