A concert pianist, dexterous at the keyboard and dour everywhere else, is nothing like the irresponsible father who abandoned him. Or so he thinks, until dissolute Dad pops up after a three-decade absence, whereupon Road North morphs into a road movie – a comic odyssey into Finland’s upper latitudes and, occasionally, farce’s outer reaches. Really, though, it’s that familiar highway of wacky misadventures, where son and father are bound to bond. Yep, turns out the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and the tree steals the show – Vesa-Matti Loiri plays him with a wonderfully rumpled joie de vivre. This is ultra-light Kaurismaki, but the veteran still has a deft touch – deft enough that the pic is watchable right to the last frame, and forgettable shortly thereafter.
