TIFF movie review: The Gatekeepers Add to ...

  • Directed by Dror Moreh
  • Country Israel/France/Germany/Belgium
  • Language English, Hebrew

Six former heads of the Israeli intelligence agency, Shin Bet, talk with surprising candour about how the 45 years since the Six-Day War, which left Israel in control of a million Palestinians, has changed and undermined their country’s political process. Along with some braggadocio about their accomplishments, all of these hard-nosed characters are plagued by doubts about the usefulness or morality of brutal interrogations, targeted assassinations and tit-for-tat strikes against Palestinian targets. Of particular interest is the discussion of the dangers of the Israeli religious far-right and the shattered promise of assassinated leader Yitzhak Rabin. Though interviewed separately, their message forms a consensus: The current brutal impasse is immoral and risks destroying Israel from within.

Sept. 7, 3 p.m., Bloor Hot Docs Cinema; Sept. 9, 1 p.m., TIFF Bell Lightbox.
