A scene from Thérèse Larroque.

Claude Miller died in April. This, a new adaptation of the French literary classic Thérèse Desqueyroux, is his last film. A de-prettied Audrey Tautou plays the titular role, made famous by Emmanuelle Riva in Georges Franju's 1962 version. Forty years on, the story lives as happier-ending analogue to Anna Karenina, or perhaps Madame Bovary. Of course, it is also set more recently, in 1920s rural France. Well-paced, evenly acted and faithful to its time, Therese has few flaws. But that may be simply because it takes no risks.
