In the last several years a movement has been underway to declare May the month of the short story. As there are no governing bodies deciding what months mean - and that itself would be a hair-too-whimsical of a short story plot - this is a grassroots movement. To contribute to that movement, I hereby present, every day this month, a short-story link.
Will Self's short stories are a large reason why I write. Well, that and I can't do anything else particularly well. My favourite stories are his early ones, as collected in The Quantity Theory of Insanity. Understanding the Ur-Bororo is still an unparalleled assault on British lethargy.
This new story goes backs to similar territory, though "tail end," as it were, and up a few notches on the class ladder at the same time.
