The April, 2012, edition of Report on Business Magazine from The Globe and MailThe Globe and Mail

Toronto Life has broken the stranglehold on nominations for National Magazine Awards enjoyed by The Walrus pretty much from its inception in 2003. In a release issued Wednesday in Toronto, the NMA Foundation announced that Toronto Life, a monthly started in 1966, has received 29 NMA nominations for work published in 2012, the most of any publication, followed by Quebec current affairs weekly L'actualité with 24 and The Walrus with 23.

A total of 365 nominations from 87 different magazines in 47 categories were included in the announcement, with the winners to be named June 7 at a ceremony in Toronto. Close to 2,000 entries were evaluated by 251 volunteer judges.

Report on Business Magazine, published by The Globe and Mail, received a total of 20 nominations, 13 of them for achievements in writing, tying with Maclean's for fifth place overall. One RoB Magazine article, "Building with the Brigadier," by Greg McArthur and Graeme Smith (Oct. 2012), earned nominations in three categories (business, investigative reporting, politics and public interest), the most for a single article. Globe and Mail technology reporter Iain Marlow received three individual nominations to give him and three other writers second place among individual finalists. Calgary's Chris Turner leads in the individual author category with four nods, courtesy contributions to The Walrus, Marketing and Canadian Geographic.

Another Globe and Mail publication, Globe Style Advisor, started in spring 2012, was, with three nominations, one of nine magazines honoured with NMA consideration for the first time.

The Grid, a weekly lifestyle and entertainment tabloid founded in 2011 by the Toronto Star, has 22 nominations for fourth place overall. Other magazines with double-digit nominations are Montreal's Maisonneuve (14), Cottage Life (10), Edmonton's Eighteen Bridges (10, all in writing) and Sportsnet (10).

Four magazines are in the running for magazine of the year: Corporate Knights, Cottage Life, Uppercase (a quirky quarterly "for the creative and curious" published out of Calgary) and Urbania (a quirky French-language quarterly published out of Montreal since 2003). Nominees for tablet magazine of the year are Maclean's, Canadian House & Home and Chez Soi, while veteran Toronto editor and teacher Stephen Trumper is the 2013 recipient of the NMA Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement.

The Walrus's total marks the first time since 2010 that it's earned less than 30 nominations. It received 35 nods each year in 2011 and 2012, 33 in 2010. Its biggest year for nominations was 2007 when it garnered 51.
