$7.99 a month for on-demand streaming access to thousands of movies and TV shows (though far fewer in the Canadian library than in the U.S. one), including original series Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, as well as a revival of the Fox sitcom Arrested Development. Coming in 2015: Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in the half-hour comedy Grace and Frankie. Subscribers can watch on PS3, Wii, Xbox, PC, Mac or a variety of smartphones or tablets.

Epic!

$9.99 a month or $79.99 a year for streaming access to more than 2,000 children’s books, including well-known titles (Olivia, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, the Franklin series), categorized by reading age and genre (such as fantasy, historical, sports, humour, comics and graphic novels, mystery). Currently available for iPad.

Slacker Radio

$9.99 a month for premium service, which offers on-demand access to millions of songs and albums. Apps available for BlackBerry, iOs, Android and other devices.
