The Forest Hill Village location of Type Books was awash in local literary scenesters last night as it officially opened its new, larger, location a block north on Spadina Avenue in Toronto. The bigger venue means the popular indie bookstore has room not only for more books but also to hold regular readings and author events. The free "Thursday series" begins May 27 with Globe and Mail columnist and author Russell Smith discussing his new novel, Girl Crazy. Guy Gavriel Kay will be there June 3 to discuss his latest, Under Heaven.
Also on offer is the (also free) "Sunday series" aimed at children and young adults. Shelley Peterson will be reading from Mystery at Saddle Creek on June 6; on June 13 Heather Sussman reads Nana's Getting Married, while Rebecca Eckler and Erica Ehm read their co-authored book, Mischievous Mom at the Art Gallery.
Co-owners Saul and Walbohm -- both of whom boast Ph.Ds in Canadian literature -- opened the first Type Books on Queen Street West in April 2006 and added a Forest Hill location two years later.
