A scene from Breakaway

Directed by Robert Lieberman (Canada)

Starring Toronto-bred Vinay Virmani, Camilla Belle and Rob Lowe, this romantic comedy is another in the long line of Canadian-made cinematic odes to our beloved national sport, hockey. Breakaway, however, comes at the classic sports-movie genre with a twist, incorporating Bollywood spectacle that culminates with an exuberant musical number on ice. The story attempts to bridge the cultural divide between a team of Canadian Sikhs, struggling to assimilate in their adopted community while battling it out against a team of quasi-racist goons who view the turban-wearing players as a joke. It's a frothy, light-hearted comedy and love story with toe-tapping performances from pop icons Akshay Kumar and Drake. G.M.

Sept. 10, 9 p.m., Elgin; Sept. 11, 12:15 p.m., AMC 2
