Tales of inspirational teachers, and the apparent perpetual crisis in education, have a long history in movies, often earning Oscar attention. Here are some of the standouts over the past eight decades, an era in which the genre has been formulized, reversed and rebalanced. Nowadays, the teacher is at least as likely to be in need of saving as the kids, arguably a healthy recognition that education is a mutual relationship.
