Steak (R)evolution

Sharpen your knives, vegetarians: Director Franck Ribière's documentary is designed to convert you, or at least offer temptation, from a life of kale and sprouts.

Travelling to Japan, Argentina, Brazil, France and the United States, Ribière quite literally asks, "Where's the beef?" in his quest to discover what makes good meat.

Unlike Fast Food Nation or other so-called explosive digs at the farming industry, this film may actually whet your appetite. (Bloor Hot Docs)

I am a Knife with Legs

First: points for the memorably sharp title.

Second: all due respect to Bennett Jones, the multihyphenate (writer, director, composer, editor and star) who worked on this deadpan comedy for seven years, all for just $12,000.

Part Flight of the Conchords and part pure Midnight Madness absurdism, the film will enjoy a brief run in Toronto, though perhaps not enough to justify three-quarters of a decade worth of hard work. (Aug. 8, Royal Cinema)
