Because the score by Kurt Weill is tough on singers and Bertolt Brecht's satire on consumerism is so bleak, Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny is enough to drive one to drink. With his new production of the 1930 opera – filmed live at the Royal Opera House earlier this spring – John Fulljames shows us the way to the next whisky bar, with Anne Sofie von Otter, Willard White, Christine Rice and the durable, drinkable Alabama Song as the star attractions.
