A guerrilla punk performance last year before the altar of Moscow’s Christ the Saviour cathedral, and a subsequent criminal trial, made Pussy Riot an international cause célèbre. It also scandalized the Russian Orthodox community, which already saw the cathedral – demolished by Stalin and rebuilt in the 1990s – as a symbol of resistance to tyranny. This engaging doc tells the tale from all angles, using extraordinary courtroom footage and interviews with family members and Orthodox zealots. By the end, even the defiant band members seem to see how their protest partly missed its target.
