Sure, Adam Carolla's Road Hard is a semi-autobiographical film about a reduced comedian, but the sweet-and-sour dark comedy doesn't simply relate to the yucksters who schlep from chuckle hut to chuckle hut.
It's about looking at life as an accumulation of disappointments and having the will to work for something better.

While his former partner Jack Taylor (Jay Mohr) is now a late-night television talk-show star, Madsen first slumped to reality TV and then to stand-up comedy on the road – a grind the divorced but loving father can no longer stand.
Life on the circuit is a series of humbling experiences, which gives the low-arcing film an episodic feel and a springboard for the acerbic riffs of Carolla/Madsen.
Road Hard is funny enough, and if its hum is predictable at times, its humanness is a welcome zinger.
