Funny how the most tangled of webs can come apart so swiftly (and in the case of Simon Stone’s debut feature, to such devastating effect). Stone adapts his applauded theatrical reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s The Wild Duck for the big screen here, with an impressive cast including Geoffrey Rush, Sam Neill and Anna Torv. The Australian logging-town scenery is lushly presented; a family drama involving betrayal, the return of a prodigal son and a long-harboured secret builds evenly; the acting (from Rush, Neill and and the titular daughter Odessa Young) is expert. It’s a bit like an Australian soap opera, but low-key and true-to-life.
