An archival photo showing Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, with her defence minister Moshe Dayan, at left.

Providing the primary voice and face of this history of Israeli politics, the articulate and avuncular former chief aide, speech writer and veteran prime-ministerial observer Yehuda Avner clearly enjoys being on camera. It's like he waited all his 84 years just for this.

Telling the story of the Israeli state from its inception to the Yom Kippur War, The Prime Ministers: The Pioneers is the first of a two-part TV documentary adaptation of Avner's best-selling memoirs. Avner recounts a destiny fulfilled.

Not much room for controversy here, and certainly none for counterargument, this is prime-time TV history rendered as a soothing, Papa Bear bedtime story.
