If one were to say that The Dick Knost Show’s fictional sports talk-show host was loosely based on Sportsnet’s caustic Bob McCown, one would be using the word “loosely” very loosely indeed. Bruce Sweeney’s brisk comedy is centred on a self-absorbed broadcaster whose social-media efforts are antisocial and whose support of hockey’s violent culture is turned around when he himself falls victim to a sports-related concussion. With its satirical look at the backroom machinations of a sports network, the film seems more geared for a weekly television series than an outright feature. And its message? On the ice and on the air, it’s best to keep your head up.

At VIFF: Sept. 29, 9 p.m., SFU; Oct. 9, 1 p.m., SFU; Oct. 11, 9:15 p.m., Cinematheque
