Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia with Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in the first of the Star Wars film franchise.HO/The Canadian Press

Update: A publicist for Carrie Fisher says the actress was joking when she said she would be returning to the role of Princess Leia for the upcoming Star Wars film.

But in an e-mail to The Globe, publicist Carol Marshall clarified that no announcement has been made about the film, and that Fisher meant her answer as a joke. "Sarcasm is difficult to read, needless to say," Marshall wrote, later adding: "It's not to say it won't happen ... but nothing has been announced. Stay tuned, I guess!"

Did Fisher jump the lightsabre by spilling the beans before an official announcement? Stay tuned, we guess.

Carrie Fisher says she will return to the Star Wars franchise to reprise her role as Princess Leia. In an interview with Palm Beach Illustrated, she was asked whether she could confirm that she would be returning to the role for the new Star Wars film. "Yes," she replied. When asked by the magazine what she thinks Princess Leia would be like today, she responded: "Elderly. She's in an intergalactic old folks' home," she said, laughing. "I just think she would be just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle."

Disney purchased Lucasfilm last year and at the same time announced that the Star Wars franchise would be revived with a seventh film. J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Lost) will direct, and Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3, Little Miss Sunshine) is writing the screenplay for Star Wars: Episode VII, which is expected to be released in 2015.
