A new online catalogue of gay Canadian movies is launching at Toronto Pride Wednesday with a free, 90-minute screening of 15 short films. The LGBTQ interpretation of IMDb, the Queer Media Database , is the first of its kind in Canada, and aims to get our country's gay films out of the archives. Curated by Montreal scholar Thomas Waugh and filmmaker Kim Simard, Wednesday night's program is the first of seven screenings across the country and demonstrates the diversity of material available in the database. David Secter's Winter Kept Us Warm – Canada's oldest explicitly gay film and the first English-language feature ever accepted at Cannes – will play alongside newer material such as Noam Gonick's No Safe Words and Two/Doh by Michelle Mohabeer. "There are hundreds of films to rescue from oblivion in making this project," says database co-ordinator Jordan Arseneault. "We want to make sure these films live on for future generations of queer people and cinephiles alike." The event begins at 7 p.m. at Toronto's Buddies in Bad Times cabaret.
