If Archie will not marry the singer Molly Rankin, undoubtedly others would be willing to take his place. Rankin, a young member of an East Coast musical dynasty and celebrated Canadian family, fronts the tart-tongued indie-pop troupe Alvvays, an up-and-coming act whose new single was recently touted by Stars singer and apparent tastemaker Torquil Campbell as his song of the summer.
Archie, Marry Me jangles despondently but not depressingly, with an undertow of moody guitar expressions. While the forlorn Rankin allows for her man’s wedding-bell reluctance (“You’ve expressed explicitly your contempt for matrimony/you’ve student loans to pay, you will not risk the alimony”), she still issues her white-dressed desires with an arcing, aching chorus that lays her needs on the line.
