One Night Only

  • Barbra Streisand
  • Columbia

Last September, after releasing her "jazz" album, Streisand made a heavily publicized return to the Village Vanguard, performing before a crowd of 123. For those who couldn't get in, there's this CD/DVD; whether it was worth the wait depends on whether you prefer your Streisand singing or chatting. The vocals aren't as pristine as in the studio, but her interpretive instincts remain razor sharp, particularly on If You Go Away (Ne me quitte pas). And while her celebrity pals - Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicole Kidman, Bill and Hillary Clinton - are nice video fare, Streisand's tendency to talk to them over the piano solos makes the event seem more like a club social than a show.
