“New needs new techniques, and the modern artist has found new means and new ways of making their statements.”
That’s the manifesto from Nerve Beats, the artful punks from Honolulu who introduce their Radio Action album with those words and the chugging garage-jazz announcement of the opening track Eyes in the Heat.
The excitement of the new comes from jagged guitars, avant ideas for bass breakdowns and drumming, which pounds like tomorrow at the door.
The cuts that follow include an off-kilter bop of beat-poetry and a power-trio version of Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. It’s fresh, it’s loud, it’s proud, and like the attack on Pearl Harbor, no one saw it coming at all.Report Typo/Error
