The Stratford Shakespeare Festival’s Broadway production of Jesus Christ Superstar will close on July 1, a spokesperson for the festival confirmed Tuesday.
Artistic director Des McAnuff's revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock opera was a critical and box office hit in Stratford and La Jolla, Calif., but opened to mixed reviews in New York in March.
Despite being nominated for best musical revival at the Tony Awards, it has been struggling at the box office, pulling in less than $500,000 a week in recent weeks.
