A scene from "The Artist"

Michel Hazanavicius's silent era film The Artist is making more noise. It has been named best film of 2011 by the Vancouver Film Critics Circle, and also picked up the award for best screenplay.

At a ceremony in Vancouver Monday night, Terrence Malick was named best director for The Tree of Life, Werner Herzog's Cave of Forgotten Dreams won best documentary and Asghar Farhadi's A Separation – Iran's Oscar submission for the foreign-language film category – won best foreign language film.

Jean-Marc Vallée's Café de flore won best Canadian film, while David Cronenberg was named best director of a Canadian film for A Dangerous Method.

Acting awards went to Michael Fassbender ( Shame) and Elizabeth Olsen ( Martha Marcy May Marlene) with Christopher Plummer winning best supporting actor for Beginners and Jessica Chastain for her roles in The Tree of Life, Take Shelter and The Help. Best actor in a Canadian film went to Peter Stormare for Small Town Murder Songs while Michelle Williams won best actress for Sarah Polley's Take This Waltz. Supporting acting awards went to Viggo Mortensen ( A Dangerous Method) and Hélène Florent ( Café de flore).

Best B.C. film went to Joel Heath's documentary People of a Feather.

Filmmaker Marv Newland (who burst onto the scene unforgettably with his 1969 short Bambi Meets Godzilla) won the Achievement Award for Contribution to the BC Film and Television Industry.

"I didn't even know film critics saw my movies," he said in his acceptance speech.
