Growing up in the 70s, campaigning in 2009

Globe and Mail Blog Post

VANCOUVER - B.C. New Democratic Party leader Carole James didn't want to go anywhere near the thick haze that enveloped the "smoke in" at the Vancouver Art Gallery this week.

The subject of decriminalization of marijuana was outside her message box today and she dismissed a reporter's question with the simple point: "It's a federal issue, as we all know."

When pressed, Ms. James suggested any change to Canada's possession laws should be driven by a national debate.

But another pesky reporter persisted, had she ever consumed marijuana?

"I grew up in the 70s. I'll leave it at that."

Did you inhale?

"Yes. I grew up in the 70s, I think that it speaks for itself."
