Christie: All the poop on Beijing sanitation

Globe and Mail Blog Post

From the bottom of its heart, Beijing will welcome the heart of your bottom.

The Chinese capital boasts the largest number of public toilets of any city in the world, according to a report from official state news agency Xinhua.

A municipal census identified 5,174 public toilets, giving Beijing the seldom recognized No. 1 ranking in the world for biffys, as the city prepares for the  Olympic Games in August, Xinhua said, citing Lu Haijun, director of the Beijing Municipal Administration Commission.

This is a higher number than in New York, London or Tokyo, said the suitably named Mr. Lu.

That doesn't mean there's always a place to dump waste. Beijing produces as much rubbish per person as is produced in developed countries, Lu said, citing that the city already is using landfills planned for 2020.
