Ah, the Cristiano Ronaldo debate. Stay with Manchester United? Make a “dream move” to Real Madrid?
I can't be the only fan finding this whole soggy mess a dull and dreary waste of everyone's life. He's choosing between World's Richest Club (England) and World's Richest Club (Spain). One gets him, one doesn't, and both will play deep in the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League regardless.
The entire mess is getting silly – so howzabout we make it sillier?
Canada has a billionaire soccer owner also – the reclusive, elusive Greg Kerfoot of the Vancouver Whitecaps. He's got a couple of nagging problems of his own these days. He can't get the city to give him some waterfront land for a privately funded BMO Field West, and his team still isn't in MLS.
So – why not go after Cristiano Ronaldo?
The dollar's up. Canadian soccer is on the rise. Why not seal the deal with a season of the Portuguese step-over king at Swangard? (Or B.C. Place, I suppose.) Watch how quickly the city does the land deal. What do you bet MLS cuts an instant deal to bring the ‘Caps aboard?
Ronaldo would be the Designated Player, of course – unless Martin Nash makes a loud, public hold-out for Steve Nash money. That could be an ugly, ugly fight -- but progress isn't always pretty.
Okay, it's a big step down for one of the greatest soccer stars on the planet. But Ronaldo was always going to have to play Hull City or Getafe anyway. Are the Carolina Railhawks (or Columbus Crew) really going to seem all that different – to him?
Let's just break this tedious back-and-forth monotony of Real wants this and United accuses that. Our billionaires have billions also. Get in there, Kerfoot! Eyes on the prize! Big picture!
Are you serious about your soccer club – or not?
Big wink!
Onward!
