Palin enjoys hunting so much, she may have had a shotgun wedding

Globe and Mail Blog Post

Since the world met Sarah Palin on Friday, we have learned a lot about the Alaska governor.

We know that she eloped with her highschool sweetheart in an effort to save her parents the cost of a wedding, and that her own 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, is five-months-pregnant and has plans to wed.

But those two facts have more in common with one another than a casual first reading suggests.

Ms. Palin married her husband, Todd, on Aug. 29, 1988. Their oldest son, Track, was reportedly born on April 20, 1989, meaning that mommy and daddy may not have said their "I dos" when he was conceived.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course. But as a vice presidential candidate whose family values and appeal to the Republican Party's evangelical base have been touted as among her strongest assets, many people will likely view it as fair-game to put Ms. Palin's pre-marital sex on the table, so to speak.

In a story on Monday about Bristol Palin's pregnancy, the New York Times confirmed that Ms. Palin conceived out of wedlock.

"The Palins eloped on Aug. 29, 1988, and their first son, Track, was born eight months later, a fact that Maria Comella of the McCain campaign, declined to elaborate on."

Bristol Palin will reportedly be marrying the father of her expected child. I wonder who'll be paying for that ceremony.
