Baird recalls 'a great cat'
Jane Taber
Transport Minister John Baird has broken his silence on his much-loved pet, a 16-year-old tabby named Thatcher, who passed away last week.
“She was a great cat,” said Mr. Baird in an email. But he called it “regrettable” that her death attracted headlines in Canada and across the Atlantic in Britain. He was referring to an email that was sent out announcing her death last week; it was misconstrued to suggest that Margaret Thatcher, the former British prime minister, had passed away.
The email flew around a gala dinner in Toronto that was packed with politicians. So quickly did it land on BlackBerrys that the Prime Minister’s spokesman Dimitri Soudas called his British contacts, checking with 10 Downing Street to get more information in advance of sending out a statement of condolence. That’s when he discovered the mix-up.
Meanwhile, Mr. Baird says he never sent such an email: “I never sent any email to anyone saying ‘Thatcher has died’!!! That’s so cold … would never do that,” Mr. Baird wrote.
However, he is not clear on exactly who did. For now he is missing his beloved pet. Thatcher, (Mr. Baird is an admirer of the Iron Lady), came into Mr. Baird’s life in 1993 when he worked as a staffer for Perrin Beatty, a minister in the Mulroney government.
“She saw me through the ‘93 defeat and five successful elections … great companion and friend,” he wrote. “I don’t think she can be replaced!!”
