One hell of a show

Douglas Bell

My blogging colleague Robert Silver across the way does a terrific job in his most recent post pointing out certain faiblesses in The Liberal Party of Canada's understanding of accountability and personal responsibility. Still, whatever chance there is for genuine contrition will likely have to wait since, starting Monday, party members and executives will be far too busy working out how to tear each other new ones once the leadership campaign gets under way in earnest, about three nano seconds after Stephane Dion gives up the ghost.

In that regard, I'm told that the party regs dictate that there will be an approximately 45% increase in accredited delegates over last time, taking the grand total to around 10,000. The drive for new members closes in late February, with the delegate selection meetings in March.

This ensures two things. First, if you're going to run, you better have an organization that's ready to fight a ground war starting day one. And second, ten thousand Liberals going at it hammer and tong means it's going to be a wide-open convention and one hell of a show.
