Hallyday, 66, says it's still 'only rock 'n' roll' for him

James Adams

After umpteen marriages, innumerable one-night stands, at least one suicide attempt, a bad drub habit, and sundry flirtations with economic disaster, you might think that Johnny Hallyday, at 66, might have some insights into the human condition. Au contraire. During an interview late yesterday afternoon, the legendary French singer and actor, in town to promote his latest film, Vengeance, said: "I don't have any conclusions. ... I hate complicated people. ... When I like people I give them what I have to give them. They can count on me. If your best friend calls you at 5 in the morning and says, 'I did a stupid mistake, I killed somebody, and the body's still here,' I'd say, don't touch anything, I'm coming."

Asked if this has ever happened to him, he said, "No."

Hallyday was sporting a silver necklace, skull rings on the fourth finger of each hand, and a bracelet of mini skulls on his wrist. Asked if this was some kind of a reminder of his mortality, he replied: "No. That's rock 'n' roll, only rock 'n' roll. I don't want to die. My wife keeps giving me this stuff."
