I don’t know what the scariest revelation was about the NHL Saturday: that some people have so much time on their hands they’re trying to come up with new helmets to aid and abet fighting in hockey – which, by extension, would make these time-wasters culpable in the event of a serious injury – or that somehow Allan Walsh, the agent for Jaroslav Halak, was out of bounds when he “tweeted” that upon further review Carey Price hasn’t won many games lately.
Walsh’s tweet has everybody exorcised but, you know, seems to me he’s looking out for his client. Kelly Hrudey, one of Hockey Night In Canada’s self-appointed guardians of the Eternal Dressing Room, was particularly over the top in his response. Relax. It’s only sports …

I’ve become a bit of a fan lately of The Bay Observer, a local newspaper that lands on the doorstep and does a solid job of covering local issues in The Hammer. Monday morning’s paper had an interesting take on Hamilton’s NHL Future and raises several interesting issues. Among them? That the city has essentially screwed itself as an NHL location by throwing in its lot with Jim Balsillie and bending over to the flawed legal strategy of his legal team. It also offers an interesting take on the role the owner of the Hamilton Bulldogs might end up playing in ensuring the city stays on the NHL’s radar. Considering all the pom-poms and streamers that usually accompany coverage of Balsillie, it’s worth at least considering. Oh, and as for all the angst about Wayne Gretzky's attendance at the Hockey Hall of Fame thingy? If the organizers want to ensure The Great One shows up for these things, they'd be better off holding them some place in the States. Like Arizona or California or some such place .....
