The NHL trade deadline is a day circled on every hockey fan’s calendar. Will your team make the big move needed to make a run at the Stanley Cup? Is the star forward headed out of town in the first move of a total rebuild? Will any of the trade rumours endlessly chewed over on radio, television and the Internet for weeks finally come to fruition?
Deadline day has turned into a media bonanza, with sports networks devoting a full day of programming to hockey insiders sitting behind a desk, checking their BlackBerrys in a race to break the latest news. It has traditionally been a big day on globesports.com as well, bringing in some of the site’s highest traffic numbers of the year.
The magic date is Monday, Feb. 27 this year and we’ve built a brand new trade tracker to keep readers up to date on all the moves as part of our coverage plan. The new tool doesn’t just list the transactions, it also lets readers vote for which team they think won the trade. We’ll also have a live blog running all day long where readers can debate the deals and ask questions to hockey experts, including Eric Duhatschek and James Mirtle.
For mobile readers, you can view the trade tracker here.
It’s a tool that we hope to add to our baseball and basketball coverage in the coming months.
And from Christopher Manza, who designed our online trade tracker:
Using responsive web design techniques, we created a single interactive trade tracker that tailors the user interface to the size of the readers device. This ensures that readers receive a highly useable experience across all platforms. All of the programming logic that powers the interactive trade tracker is consistent across both desktop and mobile devices, however the front-end interface is tailored to the resolution of the device through CSS3 media queries.
