Today we're pleased to announce the launch of Globe Politics, a dedicated application built specifically for political news junkies.

It's a focussed, streamlined experience. Our first goal is to get breaking political news delivered to your smartphone as quickly as possible. On top of that, you'll find analysis throughout the day via our Ottawa Notebook and Second Reading blogs. Finally, we're also using the app to feature the best political commentary from across The Globe and Mail - whether it's Jeffrey Simpson on the election madness, Konrad Yakabuski on Obama the multilateralist or Barrie McKenna on free trade.

The app is available for free now on the iPhone and on the BlackBerry Bold and Torch.

We're already hard at work on the first of many updates as the country moves into full-on election mode. Definitely let us know what you want to see in a must-have election application.

The first step: take the app for a spin and send us your comments either on the page below, via e-mail: mobile@globeandmail.com , or on Twitter: @globepolitics.

Aside from all of that, there's one more reason I'm very excited about the launch of Globe Politics. (And here's where things get a little nerdy, so feel free to look away.)

This is the first Globe and Mail product built on our new, honest-to-goodness API. Right now it's in a bit of a nascent stage - but eventually we hope to use it to power a slate of awesome Web and mobile applications. We'll talk more about this API business in future blog posts.
