Readers saw our news and politics blog instead of the regular site for part of the day on Wednesday, April 22, 2015.The Globe and Mail

On Wednesday, April 22, The Globe and Mail experienced a serious glitch at our data centre, which affected our readers' ability to visit the website or access our mobile apps. The outage began at approximately 2pm and by around 3pm we began shifting traffic over to our news and politics blog as an alternative means of publishing a selection of the most important stories.

The problem wasn't limited to readers trying to access our content online; we were also unable to continue production of the printed newspaper during the glitch. As a result, even though the problem was resolved at around 4:45pm, we decided not to risk any further disruption of the print edition for home subscribers and kept things stabilized at the data centre throughout the evening.

Once the Winnipeg Jets game had come to its disappointing conclusion, we felt it was safe to restore full data centre operation and brought the full theglobeandmail.com site back to life. We apologize for the inconvenience the extended outage may have caused any readers and appreciate the positive feedback from readers who liked the news and politics blog format even better.
