On our front page this morning, The Globe and Mail chose to run a close-cropped picture of Colonel Russell Williams's face staring coldly and maliciously into the camera. We felt that look into his face was chilling given the evidence presented in court yesterday and the evidence still to come of his charges.
Although the articles explain the evidence of all the crimes committed in great detail, we chose not to run the photographs of Williams in women's lingerie in part because the readers have no choice in what photographs they see on the front page. They can choose to read the articles and to stop when it might become difficult, but not so with photographs.
We are offering a selection online for readers who decide they want to see some of that evidence. On an inside page we ran a photograph showing a lineup of women's bras and panties meticulously organized and catalogued by colour and lined up precisely.
Also, during day one and day two of the sentencing hearing Globe reporters Timothy Appleby and Greg McArthur have published a live account from inside the courtroom. The content in this account provides a great deal of evidence, much of which is graphic in nature and may be disturbing to some readers. If you don't wish to be exposed to some of the more distressing details of these charges, we are encouraging readers to restrict themselves to the accompanying news story that contains a more limited courtroom account.
