Rex Barnes was first elected to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for the riding of Gander-Grand Falls, province of Newfoundland & Labrador, on May 13, 2002.
He has been appointed by the Federal Progressive Conservative Caucus as the Party’s Critic for Transportation and Public Works & Government Services.
Rex is 43 years old and was born in Grand Falls-Windsor. He is married to Debbie Folks, also from Grand Falls-Windsor; they have two children, Michael and Ashley, and 1 granddaughter.
Having graduated from St. Mike’s High School, Rex was most recently employed as a Paramedic with the Central West Health Care Corporation. Before his move to federal politics, Rex was serving his third term (9 years) on the Grand Falls-Windsor Town Council. During his tenure on Council both chaired and served on the following committees:
- Economic Development
- Finance and Administration
- Public Works
- Recreation
- Salmon Festival
He was also an active volunteer with the Canadian Red Cross Society and the Tennis Club, Grand Falls-Windsor (20 years).
Rex also has 20 years union involvement with CUPE Local 990, serving as President and Treasurer with the Provincial Executive.
