Gérard Binet is a businessman and shareholder in a manufacturing company (since 1998) in the the Amiante region. Mr. Binet was trained as an industrial designer at the École des arts et métiers at Thetford Mines.

From 1996 to 2000, he was mayor of the municipality of Saint-Méthode and in that capacity, played an instrumental role in merging the two municipalities of Saint-Méthode et Sacré-Coeur-de-Marie. From 1975 to 1988, he held a number of positions at the Lac d'amiante, particularly that of quality auditor.

On November 27, 2000, Mr. Binet was first elected as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Frontenac-Mégantic. He was a member of the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs, the North and Natural Resources, the Agriculture and Agri-food Committee, and now sits on the Standing Committee on Industry Science and Technology.

On February 4, 2004, he was elected Chair of the Quebec Liberal Caucus. He was also Chair of the Communications subcommittee of the Quebec Caucus for one year. He has been director of a number of parliamentary associations. The role of these associations is to promote the interests of Canada in multilateral and bilateral situations.

Mr. Binet is respected by all. His leisure activities include martial arts, downhill skiing and mountain biking. He was born in 1955 and has two children.
