· Earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Simon Fraser University in 1987

· Served as a Lieutenant in the Canadian Armed Force 1989-1990

· Joined Canada Post in 1992 and became active in the Canadian Union of Postal Workers

· Transferring to Kimberley in 1996, later became President of the CUPW local

· Served as President of the Kimberley Search and Rescue Society
