After 10 successful years as a Member of Provincial Parliament, Mr. Flaherty was acclaimed as the candidate for the Conservative Party of Canada in the riding of Whitby-Oshawa. In August of 2005, Conservative Leader and Leader of the Official Opposition, Stephen Harper appointed Jim Flaherty as Co-Chair of the Task Force on Safe Streets and Healthy Communities.
First elected in 1995 and re-elected in 1999, and again in 2003, as the Provincial Member of Parliament for the riding of Whitby-Ajax and, most recently, as the Critic for Public Infrastructure Renewal for the Official Opposition.
Mr. Flaherty served in the Ernie Eves cabinet as Minister of Enterprise, Opportunity and Innovation. In this role, Mr. Flaherty’s mandate was to secure Ontario’s position on the leading edge of the global economy by advancing innovation and excellence in all industries throughout the province.
Mr. Flaherty previously served in the Mike Harris cabinet as Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance. As the Minister of Finance, Mr. Flaherty was responsible for the allocation of a $64 billion provincial budget and the development and implementation of major tax reductions. He was also responsible for Ontario's $20 billion SuperBuild Corporation.
Since 1995, Mr. Flaherty has also served as the Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Native Affairs, Minister of Labour, and Solicitor General and Minister of Correctional Services.
Mr. Flaherty graduated from Princeton University cum laude and Osgoode Hall Law School. He was called to the Bar in Ontario with honours in 1975. He practiced law in the private sector for more than 20 years before entering politics.
He is an active member of his community and is the past president of the Head Injury Association of Durham Region.
Mr. Flaherty and his wife, Christine, reside in Whitby with their fourteen year-old triplet boys, John, Galen and Quinn and their dog Guinness.
