The Honourable Judi Longfield has a long history of public and community service. Born in Northern Ontario, she studied Business Administration at Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology and went on to graduate from North Bay Teachers College. She taught Geography and History at the intermediate level and Economics, Business, Accounting and Commercial law at the post-secondary level before leaving education to raise her family.

In 1997, Ms. Longfield was elected to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for Whitby-Ajax. She was re-elected in 2000 and in 2004 in the redistributed riding of Whitby-Oshawa.

Ms. Longfield has served on several Standing Committees including Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, National Defence and Veterans Affairs, Procedure and House Affairs, the special Joint House Senate Committee on Child Custody and Access, and Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities.

Following her re-election in June 2004, Ms. Longfield was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council of Canada and was appointed the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour and Housing. In addition to her duties as Chair of the Permanent Joint Board of Defence and as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour and Housing, Ms. Longfield chairs the Liberal Auto Caucus (elected October 2004) and was a champion at the recently negotiated Voluntary Agreement with the Auto Industry to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs). Ms. Longfield has also been an extremely vocal supporter of increased investment in the Auto Assembly Industry in Durham (Beacon) and in other operations throughout Ontario.

In 2004, Ms. Longfield also became a member of the Board of Internal Economy acting as the primary representative for the membership of the Standing Committees of Parliament. She was re-appointed to the Procedures and House Affairs Committee and Chairs the Subcommittee on the Disclosure Statement under the Conflict of Interest Code for Members of the House of Commons and the Subcommittee on Parliamentary Privilege.

Judi is married to Alan Longfield, retired Elementary School Principal, who is a co-author of several books related to Camp X, and Canada’s World War II History. They have one son, Michael.
