Sundin gives little thought to his future

Mats Sundin strode through a forest of television lights and cameras yesterday afternoon looking nothing like a man supposedly consumed with angst over his future.This was no tormented Swede, ready for a starring role in one of Ingmar Bergman's sunny little flicks. Indeed, Sundin has probably never even heard of his gloomy countryman. When someone asked whether this must have been a lousy summer wrestling with the question of continuing his hockey career, the affable fellow practically shrugged.

Bryan McCabe's days with the Toronto Maple Leafs will officially come to an end shortly after Sept. 1.None of the parties involved will say so on the record, but it appears the veteran Leafs defenceman will waive the no-movement clause in his NHL contract and agree to a trade that would send him to the Florida Panthers.

Doug Gilmour took another step in his post-playing career yesterday when he joined the Toronto Maple Leafs' farm team as an assistant coach on head coach Greg Gilbert's staff. For the past two hockey seasons, Gilmour was the Leafs' professional-development adviser. He gave advice to the young players in the Leafs' system at all levels and provided player evaluations to management. Gilmour's stint with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League will be his first job as a professional coach. Gilmour's contributions to the Leafs as a player will be recognized on Jan. 31, 2009 when a banner in honour of his No. 93 will be raised at the Air Canada Centre.

Mats Sundin held his long-awaited meeting yesterday with his agents, but his future remains as vague as ever.Sundin, 37, told J.P. Barry and Claes Elefalk of CAA Sports LLC that he still has not decided whether he wants to play one more NHL season. Barry said Sundin told him he will make a decision ''some time in August.''
