It's not yet the cover of the Rolling Stone, but The Sheepdogs are the first band to have their photograph in the editorial column of The Globe and Mail. (Even Arcade Fire, regulars on these pages, have not received this honour.) The hirsute Saskatooners are competing with Lelia Broussard of Los Angeles in the final round of Rolling Stone magazine's Do You Wanna Be a Rock Star contest. The winner will be on the cover of the magazine's Aug. 18 issue.

On their debut album, The Sheepdogs' Big Stand, the band experiments with slashing, Santana-esque guitars, hints of early Pink Floyd, late Beatles, and classic Grand Funk Railroad. There's the occasional cowbell. The influences may draw heavily from rock'n'roll circa 1969 to 1976, but the sound is fresh.
